SHITle preview artwork

SHITle presents a single fixed destination word, SHIT, and challenges you to transform a given starting 4-letter word into that target by changing exactly one letter per accepted step. Each accepted intermediate word must appear in the game’s reviewed English word list. The game shows the destination and the starting word and tracks how many moves you use compared with the par for that puzzle.

There is a Daily mode that provides one puzzle per UTC date and a Practice mode that lets you try additional starts on demand. Daily starts cycle through a set of 200 verified familiar words and everyone using the same UTC date and this game version gets the same start. Your first daily finish on a date is recorded in local browser statistics; practice attempts do not affect that record.

SHITle runs fully in the browser with no account required and no payment. Progress, the current path and daily statistics are saved to the device when browser storage is available. Rejected entries do not count as moves, you can undo or reset a puzzle, and after finishing you may reveal a shortest route or share a non-spoiling summary that hides your route words.

How to play SHITle

  1. Read the starting 4-letter word shown above the board.
  2. Type a next 4-letter word or use the on-screen keyboard and press Enter to submit.
  3. Each accepted step must change exactly one letter from your last accepted word and must be a word in the game’s reviewed dictionary.
  4. Continue building moves from each new accepted word until you reach the destination SHIT.
  5. Use Undo to remove the last accepted move or Reset to restart the same puzzle; Reveal a shortest route becomes available after finishing.

Tips for SHITle

  • Work one letter position at a time and consider changing a matching letter if it opens new connections.
  • Think backward from SHIT to find familiar words that are one step away and then connect them to the start.
  • Use Breadth-First logic mentally: explore all single-letter neighbors of your current word before committing to a long detour.
  • If a branch fails, use Undo to backtrack quickly rather than resetting the whole puzzle.
  • Try Practice mode to experiment with alternate strategies without affecting daily statistics.

SHITle FAQ

What is SHITle?

SHITle is a free daily 4-letter word ladder game that requires changing one letter per accepted English word to reach the fixed goal SHIT. The site offers both a Daily puzzle that rotates through verified starts and a Practice mode you can use any time to try additional starts without affecting daily records.

Can I change two letters or rearrange them?

No, exactly one letter position must change from your last accepted word and all entries must remain four letters long. Swapping two letters or submitting the same word are rejected because they do not meet the single-position change rule, and rejected guesses do not count as moves.

Which words can I use?

You may only use words from the game’s reviewed selection of 2127 four-letter entries drawn from its English Speller Database selection. The dictionary includes everyday slang, plurals and inflections, excludes proper names and initialisms, and may differ from other dictionaries; rejections reflect this game’s list.

When does the daily puzzle change?

A new daily start appears at 00:00 UTC based on your device date and clock, so the daily puzzle switches at that exact UTC boundary. The site notes that local midnight may differ and advises keeping your device clock accurate to ensure you see the intended UTC-date puzzle.

Will SHITle remember my progress?

Yes, SHITle stores your current path, unfinished word and daily statistics on the device when browser storage is available. Those saved items remain in that browser until you clear site data; if storage is blocked the game shows a notice but you can still play without saved progress.

Does sharing give away the answer?

No, the Share feature hides your route words and shows only your move count plus a tile pattern, so recipients cannot see the sequence of words you used. The worked example and the fixed target word are public, but your daily starting word is omitted from the shared result.

Do I need an account or payment?

No, SHITle runs in your browser with no account, no payment and no active ads; it requires JavaScript and a keyboard and is free to play. Google Analytics is optional and only runs if you allow it via the Privacy & analytics choice.
