Wherestan asks you to identify a single country each day by making up to six guesses. Each guess is scored across four numeric or categorical clues: continent, population, area in square kilometres, and the number of land-bordering neighbours. The game also shows the straight-line distance and an arrow pointing from your guess to the target country to help narrow possibilities.

Clues are marked as match, close or no match according to fixed rules: population and area count as matches within 2 percent and closeness within 25 percent; neighbour counts match when equal and are close when they differ by one; continent matches only when identical. The distance display turns greener as you get nearer and the puzzle updates at midnight in your time zone.

How to play Wherestan

  1. How to play Wherestan: Enter a country name as your first guess and submit it.
  2. Check the four clue columns for continent, population, area km² and neighbours to see match, close or no match feedback.
  3. Look at the distance value and the arrow which points from the guessed country's center to the answer and note whether distance decreases.
  4. Use the clues across successive guesses to home in on the country and find it within six attempts.

Tips for Wherestan

  • Start with a country that is easy to visualise geographically so the distance arrow gives a clear region direction.
  • Pay attention to the population and area arrows; they tell you whether the answer is larger or smaller, which quickly eliminates many options.
  • Use neighbour counts to distinguish countries in dense regions; a neighbour match or a one-off close value narrows candidates sharply.
  • Combine continent matches with distance direction to focus on a specific part of that continent rather than the whole landmass.
